Step by step

How the process works

Step 1

Indication

We assess whether your case is a candidate when other treatments have not worked.

Step 2

Ultrasound-guided injection

Using ultrasound, we guide the needle to the exact point, with greater precision and safety.

Step 3

Follow-up

We reassess the response and continue with the necessary plan.

The full guide

What it involves

In summary: guiding the injection with ultrasound allows us to reach the exact point of the injury, with more precision and safety than injecting blindly. They are reserved for cases that have not improved with conservative treatment. In Barcelona and Igualada.

Ultrasound-guided injections administer the treatment (hyaluronic acid, PRP or others) guided by ultrasound, so that we reach the point of the injury with precision instead of injecting blindly.

They are reserved for cases that have not improved with conservative treatment. Ultrasound guidance makes them more precise and safe.

Why it matters that the injection is ultrasound-guided

Injecting “blindly”, guided only by touch and anatomy, means trusting that the medication reaches where it should. Sometimes it does; other times, it does not. Ultrasound changes this: we see the needle and the injury in real time, and verify that the treatment is deposited exactly at the injured point.

This matters for two reasons. Precision: in small structures like Morton’s neuroma, a few millimeters make the difference. And safety: seeing what you are doing allows you to avoid tendons, nerves and vessels that should not be touched.

At Serven we perform an ultrasound at the first visit, so that the same image used to diagnose is later used to treat.

Corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid or PRP: how we choose it

There is no “better” substance: there is the one indicated for each tissue and each moment. Corticosteroid can help in specific inflammations, but it is not for repeating without limit. Hyaluronic acid —alone or combined with proline— is oriented more towards joint problems and tissue lubrication. And PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and growth factors seek to stimulate tissue repair; we assess them in selected cases.

The choice depends on the diagnosis, the time of evolution and what you have already tried. We explain the options, what you can realistically expect from them and why we propose one and not another. No injection is done without you first understanding what we are giving you, where and with what objective — this clarity is also part of the treatment.

Who is this treatment for (and who is it not for)

Injections are never the first step. They make sense when a well-diagnosed injury — a stubborn plantar fasciitis, an Achilles tendinopathy that does not quite respond — has not improved with well-executed conservative treatment.

They are not for those seeking a shortcut without correcting the cause: if your gait continues to overload the area, improvement will be short. That is why we often combine them with insoles or exercise. And if we believe that injecting will not provide you with any benefit, we tell you and look for another route.

The injection is done in the clinic, on an outpatient basis, and afterwards we perform follow-up to assess the response. We have been treating the foot since 2005, and if there is one thing we have learned, it is that a good injection begins long before the needle: it begins with a good diagnosis.
