What it involves

In summary: chiropody keeps feet healthy — toenails, corns, calluses, and ingrown toenails in the early stages — performed by professionals. It is especially recommended for diabetes or circulation problems, where a small injury can become complicated.

Chiropody is maintenance podiatric treatment: therapeutic trimming of toenails, debridement of corns and calluses, and care of the ingrown toenail in early stages. Performed by professionals, it avoids complications and day-to-day discomfort.

It is especially recommended for people with diabetes or circulation problems, where a small foot injury can become complicated.

For everyone who wants to keep their feet healthy, but there are profiles where chiropody goes from recommended to almost essential.

The elderly, first of all. With age, it becomes harder to reach the feet, the skin becomes more fragile, and nails thicken and become difficult to cut. A bad trim or a neglected corn can end up in a wound or an ingrown toenail. Periodic chiropody keeps the foot clean, comfortable, and under professional supervision.

People with diabetes, too. In the diabetic foot, a small injury can quickly become complicated; therefore, nail trimming and debridement must be done by a podiatrist, never with a blade at home.

And anyone with corns or calluses that return again and again, no matter how much they are treated.

Corns and calluses: why do they return if you only trim them

A corn is not bad luck: it is the skin’s response to repeated pressure or friction. If we only remove it, the pressure continues and the corn returns within a few weeks.

That is why, in chiropody, we do not limit ourselves to debridement. We look for the origin — footwear, toe shape, way of walking — and propose how to correct it. When the cause is gait, a biomechanical study and, if necessary, custom insoles can space out visits significantly. The best chiropody is the one you need less often over time.

Nails: more than just a trim

At every chiropody session, we also review the condition of the nails. A thickening or a color change can be a onychomycosis (fungus), which is best confirmed and treated early. And a repeatedly poorly angled trim can favor the nail becoming ingrown.

Detecting these problems in time avoids longer treatments later. It is the least visible part of chiropody, and often the most valuable: a few minutes of professional review save many headaches.

We have been treating feet since 2005, in Martorell, Barcelona, and Igualada. Whether you come for a specific discomfort or for maintenance, you will leave with your feet ready and a clear plan of how often it is advisable to return.
